Remembering

In Memoriam:

Ilsa, my diva dog
October 8, 1995-August 29, 2006

She died last year on the night before school started.

We scattered some of her ashes earlier this summer down in Southern Maryland, the place of some of her happiest days. Today we buried what we kept--by far most of them--and placed some stones from the St. Mary's River over them, in the shady spot near the gate where she used to lie in the periwinkle so she would be the first one to greet you when you came home.

Z. and I had some talks today about how when you finish crying you feel better. She asked me "Now do you feel happy dat Ilsa dayeed?" A. translated this as: "I know Ilsa died, but are you feeling better now, Mama?"

And actually, seeing those stones when I came through the gate, even though my heart twisted a little, I did feel better. I've missed her waiting for me.

I so dread this time coming someday for us. It breaks my heart. I'm glad you feel some peace.

S--
You commented on my avatar on Wed. Whining, so of course I had to come see your blog.

Yes, Fluff (her blogname) is an Aussie. She was born about 2 months after your Ilsa. She came into my life 11 years ago when her first family dumped her at the Humane Society and I listened to the voice that told me I needed to go to the HS that day.

I am so sorry to read that you lost Ilsa a year ago, but I loved the stories of your life with her. She is still present in your life -- soul connections are too strong to break just because one or more bodies fail.

Here's to Aussies and their people! Please lay a flower at Ilsa's resting spot for me and Fluff.

Furrow, yes, they *do* break our hearts. But, oh, they fill them up first.

kabbage, thank you so much for coming by! I love that Fluff is Ilsa's near age-mate. I'm glad you noticed that tug to go the shelter and connected with her. I hope she's doing your heart good for a long time still.
