Where does she get this stuff?

S.: We're not going to go to the bakery because the bakery is closed now. We're going to go to the co-op instead. We can get cookies there.

Z.: Mama, dat's NOT true! Dat's HORRIBLE!

Z.: I have to do my work, work, work. Because it's my work. And because it's ... possible.

well, I admire the drive. Me? I don't do my work, work, work... because it's possible to procrastinate just a bit longer...

Believe me, Julia, I'm with you! But Uncle Donor has a fabulous work, work, work ethic (for instance, unlike me he actually finished his dissertation), so maybe it's in the genes.

So, the co-op doesn't have good cookies? Or at least not as good as the bakery.

At the bakery you can sit down at a table and have milk with your cookies and the cookies are in fun shapes and sometimes have purple sprinkles on them. The co-op is just left in the dust.

Do they have Health Cookies at the co-op? Because if so, I am with Z. Dat's HORRIBLE.

Goodness gracious, we would never purchase cookies like that! What would be the point?

No, at the co-op Z. always wants Ginger-0's because if she gets them she can discard the cookies and eat the icing out of the middle. All that pure sugar zipping straight into the toddler bloodstream! And I make her get something else for the same reason.

Oh, my - I'm stunned by the range of events in the "Rhymes" household since I left for a quiet weekend in the country. The toilet was just TOO much, but you seem to have handled it with a sense of humor! I love Z's approach to work. I think I will chant her slogan to myself when work gets particularly frustrating. I must say that as a child who grew up eating a high proportion of my food from that very co-op, it is my prerogative to observe that carob chips are NOT the same as chocolate chips, and that in fact possibly one reason I don't like chocolate chip cookies in any case is the legacy of the carob thing!

Hi Mom! We're doing okay--looking forward to the country ourownselves.

Jenny, I, too, was a child of the 70's. Carob has no place on our pantry shelves, not even if tries to come in on a raisin. Mama-approved cookies from the co-op tend to be Newm@n's Own or B@rbara's fruit/fig chews. But they don't have purple sprinkles.

Yes, I did not really think you would be carobing it up--of course I understand the lure of the purple sprinkles too... did you ever get the ice-cream-cone-shaped cookies at Bredenbeck's in Chestnut Hill?!? My mom gets those for me as a treat, very attractive...

I've never tried them--I was about to ask if they were good, but duh! We'll get one next time we're there, which is often, this time of year.

I suppose you might know the bakery of the purple sprinkles--Night Kitchen at the foot of the Hill, across from Staples. It can't have been around when we were kids but it's been there at least for the eight years since I moved up from CC. Anyhow, well worth a visit.

Funny. I get a lot of "that's not FAIR" - when fairness really has nothing to do with it.

If this were charades I'd be touching my nose and pointing to you. Z. loves the formula "dat's not TRUE Mama," and its variations, because it expresses so perfectly her belief in the power of her own will. Whatever bearing truth actually has on the matter.

Poor kiddos.
