Thaw

There are hellebores about to bloom in my garden, small green pokes of curled tulip leaves. And dog poop, but that's how it goes.

I stopped on my way back home from the co-op, found a pruning saw I had forgotten I owned, and pruned back the branch of the forsythia that I had trained myself to duck around every time I go in and out of the house.

A little more space. A little more hope.

Jo(e), February is a short month. Don't get me wrong, it can still be a fucker, but it's easier, further south, where you can see winter's hold breaking up earlier.

I'll have to trust you on that.

Nyah, nyah, nyah, all you northerners!

Really, Songbird, I'm a Southerner by birth living at the northern limit of my range, but I suppose you could say the same. Larger ranges, maybe?

February over here brought eight inches of snow to South London! Some hardy shoots had actually been appearing here and there - doubt they'll have dealt with the onslaught too well. I wouldn't call it cruel so much as inconvenient for most people, though I wouldn't have liked to be old or infirm on the ungritted pavements and roads.

P.S. The security word was 'shoott'. I swear the robot reads these posts sometimes...

Hmm - I still have a good few inches of snow/ice EVERYWHERE.

But I need some hellebores. When can you plant them?

No sign of spring here until at least March.

But somehow, it helps to read about spring other places as it gradually creeps north ....
